St. Joe's Prep Suffers First PCL Loss to Archbishop Wood

UNIVERSITY CITY, Pa. — Chase O’Neil ‘28 scored a second-half goal as Archbishop Wood shut out St. Joseph’s Prep 1-0 on Friday. 

The two teams went into halftime tied at 0-0 although a free free kick from Henry Langraff ‘27 in the 25th minute brought the Prep one of their best chances of the half. The set-piece drew goalkeeper Matt Landon ‘28 off his line and following his misjudgement, the Prep got a head on the ball but the shot went just above the crossbar.

The Vikings changed their second half tactics, electing to go with a high pressure system. This change saw success, when in the 59th minute, a throw-in deep in the Prep’s defensive third found Nate Hughes ‘28 who fired a cross into the box that was finished off by O’Neil ‘28.

Friday’s game was the Prep’s first loss to Archbishop Wood since September of 2023. 

Tuesday at 7:00PM the Hawks will move on to face Archbishop Ryan away. Also on Tuesday, Wood, advancing to 2-0 in PCL play, will be playing at Roman Catholic.
