Once a year, Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School holds a Freshman Intramural Three versus Three basketball tournament in the Kelly Fieldhouse. At this event, students get to select their own teams. This year, there were thirteen teams, each team having three players on the court with one or two substitutes. Each team rotated their substitutes onto the court throughout their games. This tournament gives the freshman the opportunity to meet new people and expand their knowledge about their classmates while also staying active and engaging in healthy competition.

The tournament games are single elimination and last 10 minutes long. This tournament makes it possible for freshmen to play basketball who wouldn’t want to try out for the SJP basketball team, but still want to play organized basketball of some sort. This tournament is run by Dr. William Gillespe, as well as other staff members and students who help out with registration and officiating during the games. This year’s tournament started on Friday, September 24, during community period and will continue in the coming weeks. When most people think of an Intramural 3v3 basketball tournament, they think that it would be laid back and not a lot of people would care. This is the complete opposite. All of the players actually care about trying to win the championship and trying to achieve athletic success. Even for the players that get knocked out in the first round, they still go to games and cheer on their classmates that are still in the tournament. Even people not signed up for the tournament join the fun by spectating and cheering on their fellow classmates.

The 3v3 Intramural Basketball tournament is something that freshmen look forward to. Though overlooked by some freshmen, this tournament is a great way to get to know new people and get used to St. Joe’s Prep. Signing up for a basketball tournament can sound  like a big commitment.  Some freshmen may not sign up just because they are worried they will miss the clubs they are already signed up for. However, even if students are involved in other activities, there is always time to try something new. The Prep truly benefits from activities like the intramural basketball tournament, which help friends meet friends, and strengthen the Prep community.
